Kettle Falls School District Families, You may have seen on the local news or heard rumors that school districts across the State, including Colville School District, received swatting threats today of an active shooter. This is true; however, Kettle Falls School District was not one of them. Currently authorities believe it to be a hoax. As you know student and staff safety is our highest priority, and even though we did not receive the same threat today, we coordinated with local law enforcement and reviewed our protocols so that we will be prepared if we receive a similar threat. Your children’s safety is our highest priority. Please reach out if you have any questions. Michael Olsen Superintendent

Today the Kettle Falls School District participated in a joint evacuation drill of the high school involving Kettle Falls School District Transportation, Kettle Falls Police Department, Kettle Falls Public Works, Stevens County Sheriff's Office, and Stevens County 911. This drill simulated an off site evacuation for our high school students if we were experiencing an emergency. We want to thank the City of Kettle Falls and the Sheriff’s Office for the resources they provided. We look forward to working together with our community to ensure the safety of our students and staff here at KFSD.

The 7th grade art students at KFMS recently completed a unit on drawing and shading wolves. They used simple grids, colored pencils, and a visual reference. They first learned about shading and drawing by practicing light to dark shading on value scales and creating textured lines on a round surface. Students worked on a step by step process that took several days and paid special attention to the shape and details of the eyes, mouth, nostrils, and fur pattern over the gray areas. These wolves were on display in our hallways for conferences.

The Kettle Falls Elementary and Middle school students and staff participated in an all school challenge to be more understanding and including for Autism Awareness month in April. An assembly was given to each school to present information on autism and to begin the challenge. Each puzzle piece on the trees represents a student or staff who signed their name, saying they pledge to see past the label.

2nd Grade wrote pollinator stories after learning how plants need pollinators, how they move pollen, and how the parts of a plant work. Each student picked a pollinator choosing from moths, butterflies, beetles, flys, and wasps. Students had studied bees earlier to practice researching the other pollinators. They wrote, edited, and self published including a scientific drawing as the cover of their book. Then, Mrs. Rubin’s Current World Affairs class came to the elementary school so that both the 2nd graders and the seniors could share books with each other. The seniors wrote books about different careers. The opportunity energized and built confidence in all the students to share the hard work they had put into the writing process.

4th Graders wrote poetry during their 1st expedition, then after Christmas, they began working on performances combining poetry reading, music composition, and speaking and listening standards. In small groups students composed music played by other students in their group. Families were invited to come watch the performances, and then afterwards everyone joined up to participate in a whole group drum circle. Students also shared other learning about the Oregon Trail. Overall, it was exciting to introduce a new KFES tradition to the school especially one to share with families.

This year because of the wonderful suggestion made by one of our 8th grade students and the kindness of Mrs. Purvis for hosting in her room, we started a card club at the middle school. They met once a week after school playing card games, learning new card games, teaching each other new games, laughing, and making new friends. Over the course of the year we had a special guest come in to share some magic tricks with us. We would like to thank Magician John Hill for giving his time to share some amazing card tricks with us. I am still trying to figure out how he made that card vanish. Thank you to Mrs. Purvis, Jada, and John Hill for a great first year of card club!

On Monday March 27th our 8th grade student were able to take a trip to 49 Degrees North ski hill! This is an annual trip that all 8th graders get to take. Some students were experts on the ski hills, while others this was the first time they have ever been on skis. The 8th grade class would like to thank the teachers who came up to the ski hill, the substitute teachers that helped cover classes while the teachers were gone, our bus driver for getting us there, and the ASB for the generous donation to help make this trip possible. The 8th graders had a great time and came back to school the next day sore from all the fun they had skiing.

Students at KFMS attended their first annual pi night on 3.14. Mrs. Purvis provided different activities for students and families to earn tokens for participating in “pi challenges.” Pi, in mathematics, is the ratio of the circumference to its diameter. In its decimal form, the value of pi is approximately 3.14; but the full decimal representation for Pi never ends. Kara was awarded an blueberry pie for being able to recite the first 103 digits of pi from memory. Other students took home pies from a raffle drawing. The night ended with families enjoying pizza. Make sure to join us next year for our next pi celebration!

Kettle Falls High School's woodshop classes offer students the opportunity to develop valuable woodworking skills by making projects that are both fun and functional. The high school offers three levels of classes to improve students skills that will help in various trades. Students who complete these classes have a great understanding of woodworking skills, safety skills and techniques. Our kids make some pretty amazing projects that they get to take home.
