6th grade students at KFMS were math detectives solving math problems to help them find a missing Roman artifact in Brazil. Students worked together with a partner detective to help them find the clues and use their map to help them find where to go for the next clue. Students were immersed in a real historical event that motivated them to solve the math problems to find the end to the story! Students loved connecting their math with history to help them review their factors and multiples.

Students at KFMS are in the middle of their annual cookie dough sale. Today was the first order/money turn in day. Students who turned in forms got the chance to play dodge ball against the teachers. Please reach out to a middle school student if you would like to help support KFMS with a cookie dough order!

Math at KFMS can sometimes be a community effort. Teachers have students sitting in pairs and partnering up in routines to build on each others' thinking. These practices help ALL students participate, which will eventually help with individual work... like tests!

KFMS students have been busy in art! The beginning of the year activities have included getting to know each other through a variety of lessons. Students have created "T-Shirts About Me," name cards that have things that make them happy, snapshots illustrating their summer adventures, and posters to remind the students of their classroom agreements. All of this work helps stress one part of our KFMS goal, "...increasing our sense of belonging..."

Teachers are always learning! Bonnie from iReady visited Kettle Falls to take teachers through their student's initial assessments and what they can do to help students grow. Students at KFMS take these tests three times a year to test for growth. They set goals and share these goals with parents at their Student Led Conference. We all learn at KFMS!

5th grade students at KFMS got to know each other better in Advisories through a Character Strong lesson called, "Speed Interviews." Students asked each other three different questions and switched partners four different times. One of the questions was, "What are you most grateful for right now?" These activities encourage students to build relationships with ALL students not just their friends.

KFSD employees spent two days in late August learning about the newly adopted Character Strong curriculum. This program invites all staff members to take action to be an active part of improving culture at KFSD. Through daily activities and conversations, staff and students improve engagement, well-being, and belonging. Over 120 staff members left the training with challenges and dares to begin on the first day of school. This time spent together enabled the staff to connect and plan on how to fully implement this curriculum and improve the KFSD culture.
